At Girls Inc. of the Northern Sacramento Valley, we are dedicated to empowering girls and young women by providing opportunities to learn, develop skills, build self-confidence, and have fun. Our Smart/Academic Enrichment & Support programs are designed to foster a love for learning and to equip girls with the tools they need to succeed academically and beyond.
Girls Inc. Literacy Initiative
Our Literacy Initiative is tailored to address the literacy needs of girls in grades K-3. This program aligns closely with school-day learning to ensure a cohesive educational experience. Key aspects of the program include:
- Reading as Discovery: Encourages girls to use reading as a tool to explore new worlds and learn about topics that interest them.
- Critical Thinking: Helps girls form connections between stories and their own lives, identify with book characters, and critically examine the messages conveyed in books.
- School Collaboration: Works closely with schools to complement and enhance the literacy education provided during the school day.

Operation SMART
Operation SMART (Science, Math, And Relevant Technology) is designed to ignite girls’ enthusiasm for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through engaging, hands-on activities. The program aims to:
- Foster STEM Interest: Develop girls’ skills and enthusiasm for STEM subjects through exploration, questioning, persistence, and problem-solving.
- Career Inspiration: Introduce girls to women and men in STEM careers, helping them see these fields as exciting and attainable career paths.
- Hands-On Learning: Engage girls in practical STEM activities that make learning fun and interactive.
Components of Operation SMART include:
- Eureka!: A comprehensive STEM program that offers intensive, hands-on experiences and mentorship, encouraging girls to explore STEM fields in depth.
- Girls Dig It: Focuses on earth sciences and archaeology, allowing girls to learn about and participate in excavations and other geological activities.
- Thinking SMART: Enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills through challenging and thought-provoking STEM projects.
